December 6th – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a public ceremony will be held at 13:45 on December 6th, in remembrance of the 1989 Montreal Massacre at École Polytechnique. On this day, we honor the memory of the 14 women who tragically lost their lives due to gender-based violence. The event will take place on the departures level, in the pre-security area near the Marriott Hotel, and will include a reading of their names, followed by a moment of silence at 14:00. A Union roundtable discussion will follow in the Silver Dart Room, where we will address topics related to gender-based violence. The discussion will be led by the Local 531 YYC Women’s Advocate and a Women’s Advocate from Local 2002.

We are also continuing to accept donations for FearIsNotLove, Calgary’s Emergency Women’s Shelter. A donation bin will be available at the event for you to drop off items or you can contact [email protected] to arrange an alternative drop-off time. The holiday season is one of the busiest times at emergency shelters and there is a critical need to replenish essential items. For a list of urgently needed items, please follow this link:
