Holiday News

The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) through Homewood Pathfinder offers free, confidential, 24/7 counselling and support. You can access their services online at Homewood Pathfinder using the company name Paladin Security and the invitation code PS2686, or by calling 1-800-663-1142.

Anyone can contact the Distress Centre to speak with a highly trained responder, receive emotional support, and feel heard. They are available 24/7 by phone or text at 9-8-8 or 403-266-HELP (4357). This is a free, confidential service.

We have a Crisis Advocate who can be reached confidentially by email at [email protected] and can assist you with finding resources within the workplace and community.

We have a new digitized grievance form, it can be accessed through the MEMBERS REPORT FORM. This can be used for OT bypasses, denied breaks, and payroll issues. We encourage members to use this form, but you can still go to a Vice Chair to submit it as well. For all other grievances, these still need to be submitted by a member of the leadership team.

The Annual Holiday party is this Sunday December 8th at the Barlow Shark Club starting at 1830. There will be food and drink specials, a live DJ and over $800 of door prizes courtesy of Unifor and Paladin. Please note that this event is in no way associated or supported by the employer, so please attend responsibly. This event is intended for co-workers on days off/Vacation. Please do not book off in order to attend this event. By choosing to attend this event you acknowledge that you are attending this event on your own free will and are aware that you are personally responsible for your actions including but not limited to any attendance related issues.

We wanted to address the concerns surrounding federal day pay outs. In accordance with the MOU signed for CBA article 22, which states “Unless stated otherwise in this Letter of understanding, the MPL (Medical/Personal Leave) Terms shall apply in all respects”. If you are full time and have 4 or more days remaining, you will be paid out for them come the new year. The exact pay period is still to be determined by the company. Personal Day allowances are never paid out, only Federal sick bank balances. Part time employees’ unused days will be rolled over to next year. Remember you cannot be disciplined for using your federal days! A reminder, for any medical/sick leave that is 5 or more days in length, it may be required to provide appropriate documentation supporting the leave.

The upcoming weeks are the busiest of the year with the holiday travel season. Please support one another during this busy period as there are many unique challenges we encounter during this time of year. Be kind and patient with one another and prioritize your health and well being during this time.

December 6th – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a public ceremony will be held at 13:45 on December 6th, in remembrance of the 1989 Montreal Massacre at École Polytechnique. On this day, we honor the memory of the 14 women who tragically lost their lives due to gender-based violence. The event will take place on the departures level, in the pre-security area near the Marriott Hotel, and will include a reading of their names, followed by a moment of silence at 14:00. A Union roundtable discussion will follow in the Silver Dart Room, where we will address topics related to gender-based violence. The discussion will be led by the Local 531 YYC Women’s Advocate and a Women’s Advocate from Local 2002.

We are also continuing to accept donations for FearIsNotLove, Calgary’s Emergency Women’s Shelter. A donation bin will be available at the event for you to drop off items or you can contact [email protected] to arrange an alternative drop-off time. The holiday season is one of the busiest times at emergency shelters and there is a critical need to replenish essential items. For a list of urgently needed items, please follow this link:

Your participation and support of this important cause makes a difference. Thank you for helping raise awareness and advocating for those impacted by gender-based violence.

Health and Safety

To all employees. Any and all concerns regarding health and safety (Denied water, denied bathroom, near misses, or any incident which could lead to an injury) Must be reported first to management, always follow up to ensure it has been documented in the Hazard assessment binder/ incident report which are located at every checkpoint at the Managers podium. These concerns will then be forwarded to the health and safety committee. The names and emails of all health and safety representatives are posted in the lunchroom, and in the search room of every checkpoint.

Steps of the process

1.Submit a complaint to a supervisor/manager: report it in the assessment binder/incident report and then submit a copy of it to any of the members of the elected health and safety team via email.

2.Investigation of complaint: If a concern is unable to be resolved with the supervisor then submit it to the H&S team to begin the formal Internal Complaint Resolution Process. Regardless if a concern is resolved it is important that it is still reported, to document the concern and what the resolution was, if any. If no resolution is agreed upon, concerns will be escalated to the chairperson of the H&S committee.

Workers are protected from losing their job or from being disciplined when they report. Many screening officers are scared or intimidated into not voicing their concerns or complaints but unless these incidents and concerns are reported we cannot have them formally addressed and resolved.
